Inquisition
In 1232 Pope Gregory IX established an ecclesiastical tribunal for brutal suppression of heresy and other ungodly deeds. Church’s investigators were constantly searching the city, dragging suspects out of their beds and keeping them captured for months. The church, flooded with thousands of delations was unable to convict all the prisoners. Citizens were constantly thinking if they said or did something that could be interpreted as a heresy; never sure wether they’ll make their way back home ever again. Europe was swept by the wave of fear. The era of witch-hunt, notorious for the use of torture, left a bloody mark in human history and inevitably made its way in one of the «Tallinn Legends» chambers.
